Splashbacks, wallpapers and more inspired by the stunning designs of Lucienne Day

Over at For the Floor and More, there is a new blog post celebrating one of the most influential British textile designers, Lucienne Day. She created iconic works over a span of decades and some of her most notable patterns are part of the article.

From the delicate Fluellin and Dandelion Clocks to her most famous work Calyx, like Louisa at For the Floor, I’m a big fan. There’s an ethereal serenity to her work that encapsulates not just a time but also a feel, an emotion.
I think the greatest textile designs are something more than a home statement, they also create a sense of who we are or aspire to be. Lucienne Day’s designs do exactly this.

As part of the commemorations for her birth in 1917, the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester has an exhibition entitled ‘Lucienne Day – A Sense of Growth.’
Beginning in April 2017, I know I’ll visit – make sure if you’re near, you do too! More events are being lined up nationwide during 2017. Keep up to date through the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation here.

Our designs inspired by Lucienne Day

As our own little celebration, we wanted to revisit the time and space of Day’s work. Get a feel for the 50s and 60s and the freedom of colour and pattern narrative. Never wanting to imitate her work in any way but more to get a sense of the playfulness of the era.
We looked at available designs and tweaked them to create something that I feel evokes a glimpse of that time. I think they also have something of the contemporary within them. A sense of style that also conveys something of patterns in 2017.

From the visual riffs of Osten with it’s blue wash and red accents to the ticker tape display of Lineal, all of the three designs are designed to add colour and vibrance to any room.
Its great to look back but also so good to look forward!

Bring a little of the roaring 20s into your home – sit back, pour a cocktail and wait for Gatsby to come knocking!

This era always fills us with inspiration and we find ourselves flicking for hours through Pinterest. If we could jump inside and thumb a lift from Wells’ Time Machine and take a trip to any decade, we think we would be hard pressed to pick another like the 1920s.

From the clothes and the style to the opulent furnishings and awakening of design, we’d love to have appreciated the time first hand.

As a close second option, we can create and curate these designs and patterns to allow this era to slip into your home style. Already have a treasured object or Room Hero?

Forget about Greenery, it’s all about the blues in 2017!

Into the Blue

We know Pantone says 2017 is all about Greenery, and we do love the greens but for us, this first stretch of 2017 is all about blue and gorgeous big mural designs.

When delicate seamless floral patterns ripple across the walls to create a luxurious depth of colour, you can’t help but fall in love with the expressive qualities of a strong blue and partner up with some accent pieces, it can simply transform a space and awaken a whole new room theme.

There are so many beautiful items of furniture and accessories available on the high street embellished with either a blue highlight or contrasting hue – we especially like the Olin chaise from Marks & Spencer and the cushions from John Lewis – both below.

Kind of blue

In the kitchen where the walls can be left plain with paint or tile, a splash of colour across the surfaces can really turn heads. Our designs when printed on glass either as a patterned and coloured kitchen splashback or as a feature tile really pop and we think they can create some serious neighbour envy. Beware when the invites go out for your next dinner party!

Sometimes, except for the major projects of full renovations and custom unit fitting, the kitchen can get a little left out. It’s the room where choices are made and big decisions are taken with a change of flooring or entire new cupboard scheme but when the little things need a polish, the kitchen often gets left behind. We’re all for a change of towels or a new pastel toned kettle and toaster but add some spark in the form of a new decorative display and real drama comes home.

Over at For the Floor and More, there’s a blog article discussing how to brighten up your kitchen with 5 ideas ranging from updating worktops to adding in the Feature Tiles. The blue birds and flowers of the wallpaper above also look magnificent as a printed glass kitchen splashback.

With a lighter and more playful shade of blue, our Coral Vine riffs on summer evenings and carefree walks with a loved one. Bring the beauty of a late August day into your home as a bespoke wallpaper mural, glass Feature Tile or printed glass splashback.

Blue notes

Finally, the British design duo Doshi Levien states they, “think of architecture of the home as a canvas” and we feel exactly the same way. Be bold, be unique –  use deep swathes of blue to adorn and punctuate walls and daub colour contrasting accents across the panorama of your home!
